‘Why isn’t jazz crawling with more cellos? Here, it’s endless possibilities for soloing or accompanying and for opulence or edginess are exploited superbly by Sydney cellist Ollie Miller… [Amphibious’ aLive & Breathing] contains elements of jazz, rock, classical and folk, but the results sound organic and integrated rather than cherry-picked. The mood is often pastoral and the playing sensitive and affecting.”

Jeremy is one of Australia’s leading saxophonists and composers, having performed nationally and internationally at festivals, concert halls and jazz clubs. His music effortlessly crosses cultural borders and musical styles, and his work as a composer is equally cognizant and successful in classical music composition, jazz, world music, and contemporary music. Jeremy regularly performs with ensemble Ensemble Offspring and The Vampires.
His familiarity with music began at an early age, with his parents exposing him to world music and jazz before his musical studies began on piano at the age of six. As a music student at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Jeremy studied with saxophonist Dale Barlow, trumpeter Phil Slater and pianists Judy Bailey and Mike Nock. In 2006 Jeremy spent six months on an exchange trip to Oslo, Norway, studying composition with Geir Lysne and learning the importance of unraveling limitations of style and conventions. He then returned to Sydney to graduate in 2007 with First Class Honours in Jazz Saxophone. In 2015, Jeremy was selected as composer for Ensemble Offspring’s inaugural ‘Hatched Academy’. In 2016 Jeremy completed a PhD at the Sydney Conservatorium under supervision of Prof Matthew Hindson.
Jeremy has relentlessly pursued reevaluations of his music through further study and reflection with mentors abroad, including studies in saxophone and composition in London, Oslo, and New York with George Garzone, Tim Berne, Tony Malaby, Tim Garland, and Geir Lysne. Jeremy was part of the fertile hotspot of creativity at the Banff Workshop in Canada in 2009 and with his co-led band The Vampires in 2011, attending workshops and masterclasses with Dave Douglas, Joshua Redman, Clarence Penn, Donny McCaslin, Dafnis Prieto, Don Byron, Steve Lehman, Kneebody, Hank Roberts, Jerry Granelli, et al. Jeremy has also undertaken study of other cultures, including a week-long study of Balkan Brass Music in Greece, and study trips to Cuba and Bali.
His released albums as both leader and co-leader indicate his broad perspectives on musical styles, drawing from artists as such as Fela Kuti, Bob Marley, Morton Feldman, Karaikudi Mani, The Roots, Olivier Messiaen, Igor Stravinsky and Astor Piazzola to merge with his deep respect for the jazz tradition. This searching for identity and meaning in music never equates to over intellectualism, but challenges to seek out evolution and beauty.
The media has reported that ‘his compositions stand out from the pack’ (SMH), ‘is developing into a significant Australian voice’ (Jazz-Planet.com), and that ‘his playing shows subtle glimpses of a mature master’ (The Australian).
Jeremy has received numerous awards, grants and fellowships, including the 2015 APRA Professional Development Award, the Bell Award for Young Australian Jazz Artist, a BBM Award, and an Australian Postgraduate Award. He was a finalist in both the 2012 and 2013 Freedman Jazz Fellowship.
Besides writing for his own projects, Jeremy has also composed for Ensemble Offspring, the Modern Music Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra, Compass Quartet & Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellowship. In 2012 Jeremy was a finalist in the 2012 APRA/MCA Art Music Awards for Best Jazz Work. He was also a finalist for the 2013 APRA/MCA Art Music Awards for Excellence in Jazz.
“CONCERTS at Sydney Opera House are always special occasions for local and overseas musicians, but they are particularly pleasing if you’re an Australian jazz muso and you walk away with $15,000.
That’s what happened to Sydney saxophonist and composer Matt Keegan at the weekend when his performance helped him win the MCA/Freedman Jazz Fellowship for 2011.
The award is designed to assist young musicians (under 36) develop their careers here and overseas. Keegan, 34, already a stalwart of the local jazz circuit, plans to forge a new music genre by taking his talents to India to collaborate with folk musicians there.
Keegan’s versatility has taken him in several directions.
He has released five albums under his own name and also spent a few years touring and recording in the US with California rock band Pseudopod at the turn of the century.
“I had an artist visa to work in the States for a number of years and I learned a hell of a lot about being a musician in that time,” he says.
Other mainstream artists he has worked with include American band Maroon 5 and our own Guy Sebastian.”
