Freya Franzen has been performing with Stringspace since 2006 and features in our string quartet and duo on our YouTube Channel StringspaceLive.

Mia (violin):

Orchestra: Australian Chamber Orchestra, Victorian State Opera, Canberra Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Australian World Orchestra, and the Australian Opera & Ballet Orchestra.

Mia started piano aged 5 and violin aged 9 after being inspired by her father playing jazz.

Studied: She has recently completed her final year at Sydney Conservatorium studying with Assoc Prof Alice Waten; Currently on full scholarship at the National Academy of Music, Melbourne (2020).

Awards: First prize winner at the Open Recital section of the Canberra String Festival.

Other projects: In 2016 and 2017, Mia was selected to participate in Sydney Conservatorium’s Estivo Chamber Music Summer School in Italy where her love of chamber music has continued to grow. She has worked with Eberhard Feltz and members of the London Haydn, Kuss, and Goldner Quartets.

Fiona (violin):

Studied: Completed a Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University (QCGU); full scholarship holder at the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) with Dr Robin Wilson.

Prizes: First prize-winner of the Ena Williams Award, Postgraduate Prize, Owen Fletcher Prize, Barbara Hebden Bursary, Matilda Jane Aplin Prize, Vada Jefferies Prize, Basil Jones Sonata Prize, Nora Baird Bursary, The German Violin Travel Bursary and the Griffith Award for Academic Excellence.

Masterclasses: Fiona had also performed in many masterclasses, including the 2018 Musica Viva masterclass series with world-renowned violinist Ray Chen.

Solo: featured on 4MBS Classic FM as the winner of the QCGU Brisbane Clubs Award and the Club’s Audience Choice Award. Fiona was also a violin soloist with the Queensland Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra and Kelvin Grove Orchestra.

Orchestra: Concertmaster of the Queensland Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra during their performance of Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben, where she enjoyed tackling one of the most challenging concertmaster solos in the orchestral repertoire. Fiona was also twice the Concertmaster of the Australian Youth Orchestra’s (AYO) National Music Camp and attended the 2019 AYO International Tour and Chamber Players program.

Fiona also loves exploring other genres of music and has performed alongside singer and songwriter Katie Noonan.

Outside of music, Fiona is passionate about food photography and frequently blogs about Brisbane and Melbourne eats online.

Hana (violin):

Orchestra: Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra; Sydney Philharmonia Orchestra & a scholarship holder with the Australian Chamber Orchestra for the ACO Academy.

Studied: Bachelor of Music majoring in Violin Performance from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music studying with Professor Alice Waten; Currently studying on full scholarship at the National Academy of Music, Melbourne (2020).

Member of the Rising Star program at the Sydney Conservatorium. Hana has given concerts at cancer hospitals since the age of 10 and has been the winner of many eisteddfods – including Junior champion.

Awards: Winner of the Marcus Edward Violin Scholarship and semi-finalist at the Kendall National Violin Competition.

Peter (violin):

Peter has performed in Carnegie Hall, New York, Walt Disney Hall, Los Angeles, and Australia with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

Studied: First Class Honours at Melbourne University, full scholarship holder at the Australian National Academy of Music.

Awards: Tasmanian Young Achiever of the Year Finalist, Rotary Club of Melbourne Young Achiever of the Year, Winner – Melbourne University Concerto Competition.

Other projects: Chamber music performances throughout Denmark with Principal Violist of the Berlin Philharmonic.

Kristian (violin):

Australia’s wunderkind of the violin, Kristian Winther, returns to both direct and perform the solo part in this much-anticipated premiere of Beethoven’s violin concerto in Elisabeth Murdoch Hall.

Born in Canberra in 1984 to pianist parents, Kristian Winther studied both violin and conducting.

Concerto debut: Sibelius Violin Concerto in 2000

Soloist: Melbourne Symphony, Sydney Symphony, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonic, and the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra.

Kristian performed the Australian premieres of Brett Dean’s Violin Concerto “The Lost Art of Letter Writing”.

Guest Assistant Concertmaster: Adelaide Symphony, WA Symphony, & the Hong Kong Philharmonic.

Concertmaster: Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Melbourne Symphony, Guest Director and Leader of ACO2.

Competition Winner: Banff International String Quartet Competition. This was followed by critically acclaimed tours of the USA and Europe.

Other projects: Kristian is also a composer. He premiered his work for string quartet “…etude” at the Sydney Opera House.

Kristian has performed with many celebrated musicians including Anne-Sophie Van Otter, Richard Tognetti, Brett Dean, and Piers Lane, and has conducted at the Canberra International Music Festival & the Melbourne International Arts Festival.

Ioana (violin):

Ioana began learning the violin at age five, in New Zealand, after her family emigrated from Serbia. She has performed as a core member of the Australian String Quartet.

Her musical background is very much grounded in Romanian and Serbian folk music.

“I have always listened to folk, jazz and good popular music as well as classical music.”

Jessica (violin):

Studied: The Juilliard School (BMus in violin performance), Yale University (BA with distinction), Yale School of Music (Master of Music)

Awards: Yale Friends of Music Award Winner, Yale Concerto Competition Winner, Carl Wendling Kammermusik Wettbewerb Winner (Germany), Fontainebleau Chamber Music Award Winner (France)

Orchestra: Orchestra Victoria, Urban Camerata (Germany)

Soloist: Live solo broadcasts on National Public Radio (US), concerto performances with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, Yale Symphony Orchestra, Fontainebleau Chamber Orchestra

Pop: Recorded string quartet backing tracks with singer Norah Jones (New York City), performed with Angelique Kidjo.

Film: Featured as a violinist extra for a film with Woody Allen. Recorded strings for films featuring Daniel Radcliffe

Natalia (violin):

Background: Violinist originally from Canberra. Member of the highly respected Harvey family.

Studied: Australian National University – combined degree of Bachelor of Music majoring in Violin Performance and Law. Scholarship holder at the Australian National Academy, Melbourne.

Orchestra: Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, Canberra Symphony & Melbourne Symphony.

Solo: Melbourne Chamber Orchestra

Other projects: Selected to perform in a piano trio at Government House for the Australian Governor-General Quentin Bryce.

Natalia has been performing with Stringspace since 2011.

Phoebe (violin):

Studied: Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance graduating with First Class Honours at the University of Queensland; National Academy of Music Melbourne Scholarship holder with Dr Robin Wilson;

Awards: Finalist at the ANAM Chamber Music Competition in both 2018 and 2019. While at UQ, she was awarded the University Medal for outstanding academic achievement, the Sleath String Prize, the Richard Pollett Memorial String Prize, and the 4MBS Musica Viva Sid Page Chamber Music Memorial Prize.

Other projects: Phoebe has performed in exciting and innovative festivals around the country with Dots + Loops, PlayOn, Momentum Ensemble, Musica Viva, and at the Bangalow Music Festival, Four Winds Festival and Huntington Estate Music Festival. She has also featured as a Next-Generation Artist with the Southern Cross Soloists.

Lauren has been performing with Stringspace since 2017.

Mee Na (cello):

Studied: Masters of Music at Sydney Conservatorium and the Royal Academy of Music, London. After graduating from ANAM’s Professional Performance Program in 2014, Mee Na completed a 2015 ANAM Fellowship (Melbourne).

Awards: ABC Young Performers Award Finalist (2015); E.V. Llewellyn Memorial Award for Overseas Study and an Australia Council for the Arts Development Grant for Affinity Collective’s 2016 European Tour.

Orchestra: Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and Principal Cello of Australian Youth Orchestra. Mee Na also performs with Victorian Opera, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, and Sydney Chamber Opera.


Lily (cello):

Studied: Royal College of Music, London. Lily is now based in Melbourne.

Recordings/film: BBC & Sony PlayStation. Lily has recently worked as cello double to Kaya Scodelario in the 2017 film The King’s Daughter.

Most recently Lucie performed as part of the Stringspace String Quartet at The Great Hall, Parliament House for Their Royal Highnesses William and Kate – the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. This event was hosted by the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

She has staged a string orchestra performance of House of Cards at the Sydney Town Hall for Vivid Festival – part of an on-stage Leigh Sales interview of Beau Willimon (the director of House of Cards). She has organised an orchestra for the Sydney Opera House for final decisions on the new acoustics being installed in the Joan Sutherland Theatre at the Sydney Opera House to be made also programmed and directed two concert series for the Sydney Opera House.

She has booked string players to perform on episodes of the TV show Home & Away, string players & William Barton for the ABC TV show Q & A, and regularly organises musicians for the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of NSW, The State Library of Victoria, and the National Portrait Gallery of Australia.

Lucie has provided numerous jazz bands for Tiffany & Co. – in Sydney, Melbourne & Adelaide; a jazz band in-store for Louis Vuitton, a solo violinist for M.A.C Cosmetics – including a performance at Vogue Fashion Night Out, an orchestra for CHANEL’s Australian Ballet Dinner at the Sydney Opera House, Estee Lauder, Dion Lee, Rolex, Bvlgari, Omega (Sydney & Melbourne), Grandiflora, Mercedes, Saba, Alannah Hill, Sotheby’s, Ferrari Maserati, Armadillo & Co., The Living Edge, Porsche (Sydney & Melbourne), BMW, Volvo, Bentley, and musicians for the Harpers Bazaar Woman of the Year Awards.

Lucie directed, edited & produced all the StringspaceLive film clips featured on our YouTube Channel StringspaceLive (which now has over 130,000 subscribers), and comes from a family of third-generation professional musicians and artists.

Studied: Conservatorium High School, Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from the ANU (distinction), Graduate Diploma in Violin Performance from the Sydney Conservatorium (scholarship); painting + other subjects at the ANU Canberra School of Art & Sydney College of the Arts.

Orchestra: Lucie has toured extensively performing in hundreds of concerts throughout France, Germany, and Australia with The New Philharmonic Orchestra of Cologne (1999 – 2002), and has performed in many opera and ballet seasons at the Sydney Opera House with the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra (2003 – 2019).
