What is a string quartet?
Like us on Facebook:

A String Quartet is made up of 4 string instruments: 2 violins, 1 viola & 1 cello. It has rich harmonies and a beautiful effect.

A String Trio is 3 instruments. 2 violins & 1 cello; or violin, viola and cello. This is more of an option for when you are working within a budget or if there is very restricted space.

A String Duo is either 1 violin & 1 cello, or 2 violins.

Most popular classical, pop and jazz music is written for string quartet and all our recordings on the website and Stringspace CD are made with the String Quartet. The string quartet is our most popular option.

We highly recommend a string quartet (particularly for weddings), so that you get the full effect of the songs that you are after.

Do you have samples that I can listen to online?

Yes, we have lots of classical, jazz and pop samples (usually recorded live at weddings) on our Repertoire page.

How early do the musicians arrive?

Stringspace musicians are expected to arrive approx. 15 minutes prior to the start of your event.

Do you require amplification?

Amplification is suggested for events with over 150 guests, though not essential.

If using amplification, we recommend placing 2 microphones on stands in front of the string quartet. Please note that Stringspace does not provide amplification.

If you are holding a particularly big event, you may want to consider adding a double bass player or an extra cellist (and/or violinist) to a string quartet for extra volume and effect.

Amplification is not required for church bookings.

What do you wear?

Stringspace girls wear stylish black; Guys wear black suit pants with a white or black shirt. Black jacket is optional.

Do I need to provide the musicians with a meal?

Meals are appreciated for 4+ hour bookings. Refreshments are appreciated for bookings that are over 1.5 hours.

Are your prices current?

Yes, all of our prices are current for 2011.

Please view our Costs & Bookings page for prices.

Do I need to provide shade/shelter for the musicians?

Yes, shade/shelter from direct sunlight or rain (even light rain) is required.

This may mean finding a location that has shade, eg: shade from trees, a veranda close to the ceremony or a gazebo.

A large secure umbrella is also a popular option.

What happens if it rains and we need to change venues on the day?

This is usually fine.

Please note the booking time will need to remain the same and the venue needs to be within the same general location.

My wedding is located in [location]. Can you provide me with a quote?

There may be extra fees for venues that are more than half an hour out of the Sydney CBD. Please view the Costs & Bookings page for our out-of-Sydney prices.

Can I have a song that is not on your Repertoire page?

Yes, this is usually fine.

Please note that extra charges usually apply for special requests that are not already listed on our Repertoire page.

Wedding Question: Can I have two songs for the Processional?

While we usually find one song works best (as there is no break in sound), you can definitely have two songs for the Processional.

Wedding Question: Does the ceremony time count as a break?

The ceremony time is not counted as an official break. However, for bookings over 1.5 hours there will be less of a break at the start (within the first 2 hours) if a wedding ceremony is included

There is no break for 1.5 hour bookings.

Can my friend/relative sing with you?

Yes, we can usually perform with a singer.

Special Tip: Ave Maria (either Bach/Gounod or Schubert) is a popular option for a classical song and is relatively easy to put together with Stringspace.

We do recommend booking for a minimum of 1.5 hours, so that your friend can have a short rehearsal with the musicians at the start of your booking.

Eg. For a 3pm wedding, we recommend booking from 2:30pm (or 2:15pm) so that your friend can have a short 5-10 minute run through prior to the ceremony and before most of your guests arrive.

Please note all rehearsal time (usually 5-15 mins) with singers needs to be paid for at the usual rates.

My wedding begins at [time]. What time should I make my wedding booking?

Music is usually performed as your guests arrive and are waiting.

E.g.: for a 3pm wedding:

- 1 hour booking: 2:50 - 3:50pm.

- 1.25 hour bookings: 2:45 - 4pm (just in case the bride arrives a little late).

- 1.5 hour bookings: 2:30 - 4pm; 2:40 - 4:10pm or 2:45 - 4:15pm.

From experience 1.5 hours is a really good amount of time to book for a wedding. There is not too much difference between the 1 and 1.5 hour prices.

Will the songs be longer on the day than the samples on your Repertoire page/CD?

Yes, most of the sound files (on the Repertoire page) are only short samples. The pieces we play on the day are usually longer than the samples.

Can I meet you in person to discuss my booking?

We don't usually meet up before the event as we find that most details can be organised by email or phone and do not require consultations. We've tried to make everything as clear as possible on the website.

If you would like to book an event consultation, there is a $220 (incl. gst) additional charge.

Can I see Stringspace performing live prior to my event?

bsolutely. If you are interested in viewing Stringspace live prior to your event, please send an email for date and venue performance details.

Wedding Question: Can you attend my wedding rehearsal?

As we perform at weddings so often and as weddings usually follow quite a clear format, we find that it is not usually necessary to attend ceremony rehearsals.

To have musicians attend your rehearsal, the prices are the same as for all bookings with Stringspace.

Wedding Question: Will you speak to my celebrant/priest prior to the ceremony to work out cues?

Yes, we usually speak to the celebrant/priest prior to the start of the ceremony to discuss cues.

Wedding Question: Do you need someone to give you a cue when to start playing the Processional?

It is a good idea to have someone organised to give the musicians their cue for the Processional for outdoor weddings.

Priests usually give the cue & signal for your guests to stand for indoor church weddings.

Wedding Question: What happens when I arrive at the altar? Does the music just stop?

The music will subtly fade out and cadence once you reach the altar.

Wedding Question: Can you provide me with an mp3 recording for my rehearsal?

Sorry, we do not provide personalised recordings.

We will absolutely ensure that the music will keep playing until you reach the altar, even if we have to add a repeat.

Catholic Wedding Question: Can you suggest songs for offertory and communion?

We suggest the following:

Offertory:
Handel – Sarabande

Communion (1-2 songs):
Bach/ Gounod – Ave Maria
Bach – Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring
Faure – Pie Jesu

Catholic Wedding Question: How long should I book for a full Catholic wedding ceremony?

Stringspace recommends definitely booking for a minimum of 1.5 hours for a full Catholic ceremony.

Legal: Does Stringspace have NSW Work Cover?

Yes, Stringspace has the legally required NSW Work Cover for all its Sydney musicians.

Legal: Does Stringspace have Public Liability Insurance?

Limitation on Liability:
The liability of Stringspace for any damages arising out of any booking, and/or any performance, is limited to the total amount of any fee which would otherwise be payable for such a booking or performance.
